Vietnam visa 2026: do I need a visa to enter Vietnam?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you need a visa to <a href=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/en\/\">travel to Vietnam<\/a> as a tourist comes down to two factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your nationality:<\/strong> Each country has its own agreements and policies regarding Vietnam&#8217;s entry requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How long you want to stay:<\/strong> Vietnam grants visa exemptions of 14 to 45 days to citizens of around 38 countries, as we break down in the next section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As in almost every country, Vietnam has some minimum entry requirements that apply regardless of whether you enter with a visa or under an exemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"passport_requirements\"><\/span>Passport requirements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your passport must be <strong>valid for at least 6 months<\/strong> from your date of entry into Vietnam. Check the expiry date before you travel and renew it if needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You need at least <strong>two blank pages<\/strong> in your passport, free of stamps or visas from other countries \u2014 simply so it can be stamped on arrival. If you&#8217;re one of the lucky ones with a full passport, get a new one to avoid problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"proof_of_onward_travel\"><\/span>Proof of onward travel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before flying to Vietnam, the airline at your departure airport will ask for a <strong>return ticket<\/strong> or, failing that, an <strong>onward ticket out of the country<\/strong> proving you won&#8217;t stay in Vietnam longer than your visa or exemption allows.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This matters: if you can&#8217;t show proof of onward travel, you may not be allowed to board. Vietnam visa exemptions: which countries can enter visa-free?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizens of around <strong>38 countries<\/strong> can enter Vietnam without a visa for stays of 14 to 45 days, depending on their nationality. Here&#8217;s how it breaks down for the nationalities that visit Vietnam most:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"united_states_canada_australia_new_zealand_and_ireland_e-visa_required\"><\/span>United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland: e-visa required<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s get the big one out of the way first: <strong>the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland are NOT on Vietnam&#8217;s visa exemption list.<\/strong> If you hold one of these passports, you&#8217;ll need a visa for any tourist visit, however short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t worry, though \u2014 the process is simple: the <strong>e-visa<\/strong> (covered below) is arranged fully online, costs US$25, allows stays of up to 90 days and is normally approved within 3 to 5 working days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"united_kingdom_45_days_visa-free\"><\/span>United Kingdom: 45 days visa-free<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>UK citizens can enter Vietnam without a visa for up to 45 days.<\/strong> The exemption applies to regular British passports; <strong>British National Overseas (BNO) passport holders are not eligible<\/strong> and need an e-visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"asian_neighbors_japan_south_korea_and_southeast_asia\"><\/span>Asian neighbors: Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Japan and South Korea: 45 days<\/strong> visa-free.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Laos and Cambodia: 30 days<\/strong> visa-free.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Philippines: 21 days<\/strong> visa-free.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brunei and Myanmar: 14 days<\/strong> visa-free.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>China and India are NOT exempt<\/strong>: travelers from both countries (as well as from Taiwan and Hong Kong) need an e-visa for any visit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"europe_45_days_visa-free_for_most_travelers\"><\/span>Europe: 45 days visa-free for most travelers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizens of <strong>Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland<\/strong> enjoy a <strong>45-day exemption<\/strong>, and since August 2025 Vietnam extended the same 45 days to <strong>the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Luxembourg<\/strong> (a policy currently in force until August 2028). Russia also gets 45 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note that <strong>Ireland is the exception in Western Europe<\/strong>: Irish citizens are not exempt and need an e-visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the record, the longest exemptions of all go to <strong>Chile and Panama, with 90 days<\/strong> visa-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_the_visa_exemption_works_at_the_border\"><\/span>How the visa exemption works at the border<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your country is on the list, there&#8217;s nothing to arrange in advance: on arrival, simply present your passport at immigration and <strong>you&#8217;ll be stamped in for your exemption period<\/strong>. You&#8217;ll still need to meet the general requirements above, including the onward ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that the exemption is <strong>single entry<\/strong>. That said, since the minimum-gap-between-visits requirement was scrapped, if you&#8217;re touring the region you can spend your full exemption in Vietnam, hop to a neighboring country and come back in for a fresh stamp, completely free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you plan to stay in Vietnam <strong>longer than your exemption allows<\/strong> \u2014 or your country isn&#8217;t on the list \u2014 you&#8217;ll need to apply for a visa. Here are your options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_vietnam_e-visa_90_days_fully_online\"><\/span>3. Vietnam e-visa: 90 days, fully online<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For anyone who needs a visa \u2014 or wants to stay <strong>longer than their visa-free period<\/strong> \u2014 Vietnam offers an <strong>electronic visa (e-visa)<\/strong> allowing stays of up to <strong>90 days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The whole process is done <strong>online<\/strong> and, once approved, your e-visa is issued within <strong>3 to 5 working days<\/strong> of applying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.gov.vn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the link to the official immigration website<\/a> to apply for the electronic visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"who_can_apply_for_the_vietnam_e-visa\"><\/span>Who can apply for the Vietnam e-visa?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Citizens of all countries and territories<\/strong> can apply for the Vietnam e-visa \u2014 including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, China and India, none of which qualify for visa-free entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"vietnam_e-visa_at_a_glance\"><\/span>Vietnam e-visa at a glance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key features of the <strong>e-visa<\/strong> for traveling to Vietnam:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It allows a stay of up to <strong>90 days<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can be issued as a <strong>single-entry (US$25) or multiple-entry (US$50) visa<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To enter the country on an <strong>e-visa<\/strong>, you must arrive through <strong>one of the designated entry points<\/strong> (which include all international airports and most land borders) \u2014 you can check the full list on the <strong>official website<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bonus_the_phu_quoc_exception\"><\/span>Bonus: the Phu Quoc exception<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One quirk worth knowing: <strong>the island of Phu Quoc has its own 30-day visa exemption for all nationalities<\/strong>. If you fly directly to Phu Quoc (with an international connection that doesn&#8217;t pass immigration elsewhere in Vietnam) and stay only on the island, you don&#8217;t need a visa regardless of your passport \u2014 including US, Australian, Chinese or Indian travelers.
