Its popularity exploded with the rise of social media platforms like Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visiting Train Street is one of Hanoi&#8217;s best-known experiences: a stretch of railway line running through several residential areas of the city. When the train passes, the space is so tight that it seems to literally glide past the residents&#8217; noses. Originally, these <strong>homes belonged to Hanoi&#8217;s poorest residents<\/strong> who, lacking other means, had no choice but to live with the train practically at their doorstep, with all the inconveniences that entails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally, these were the homes of some of Hanoi&#8217;s humblest residents, who couldn&#8217;t afford to live anywhere else and had no option but to live with the train at their door, with all the inconveniences that came with it.<\/p>\n<cite>Viajar por Vietnam<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change began when <strong>one neighbor decided to open a caf\u00e9<\/strong> on the ground floor of their house \u2014 a very common move in Vietnam. It was an instant success, quickly copied by other residents along the tracks, <strong>turning the area into one of Hanoi&#8217;s most visited tourist spots.<\/strong> Visitors came to take photos and then enjoy a drink at the caf\u00e9s, away from the capital&#8217;s noise and traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hanoi train street. Caf\u00e9 owners start pulling chairs off the street, while a municipal officer takes care of warning the more careless visitors and keeping them safe from a nasty scare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"hanoi_train_street_restricts_tourist_access\"><\/span>Hanoi Train Street restricts tourist access<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given how often this scene repeated \u2014 several times a day, every day of the year \u2014 the authorities decided that prevention beats cure. They insisted that <strong>an incident involving a foreign tourist<\/strong> could bring serious problems, something that, sooner or later, was bound to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At the end of 2019, the Vietnamese government banned tourist access to the tracks<\/strong> for safety reasons. As of today (January 2026), access has partially reopened and the street can be visited again \u2014 though there are checkpoints at the entrances, and visits are subject to restrictions or temporary closures for safety reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Even under restrictions, you can generally get in through any of the area&#8217;s caf\u00e9s<\/strong>. From other districts of the city, take a Grab or a taxi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>new section of Train Street<\/strong> in Hanoi, which is quickly gaining popularity among visitors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This stretch, still open and visitable, is <strong>located on the south side of the main train station<\/strong>, specifically <strong>by Ng\u00f5 222 L\u00ea Du\u1ea9n<\/strong> \u2014 rather than east of the city like the original section everyone used to visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As in the original section, there are <strong>plenty of caf\u00e9s<\/strong> where you can sit with a drink while you wait for the train. The train stops for no one, whether you&#8217;re on the tracks or off them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Whenever possible, enter through an authorized caf\u00e9 (especially on the Old Quarter stretch).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arrive a bit early (30\u201345 minutes before the train) so you can settle in calmly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photos and videos are fine, but the train passes within centimeters of houses, chairs and people \u2014 don&#8217;t be reckless, and follow the caf\u00e9 owners&#8217; or security staff&#8217;s instructions to the letter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respect the residents \u2014 remember this is a residential neighborhood, not a theme park.
