The lake is a rest for the senses, a place to simply step away from the traffic and the sensory overload of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take the chance to walk the full loop around the lake and watch local life go by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It&#8217;s very common, especially on weekends, to be approached by young children wanting to practice English with you<\/strong>, accompanied by their parents \u2014 Vietnam is making a huge effort to have its younger generations learn it as a second language. Even if your English isn&#8217;t perfect, try to give them a few minutes; they&#8217;ll be grateful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you come at sunset or early in the morning, you&#8217;ll also find crowds of people exercising and ladies dancing or doing Tai Chi. This scene is part of everyday life in Vietnam and reflects the value the country places on community life and public space \u2014 and on staying active at any age.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"visit_the_ngoc_son_temple\"><\/span>Visit the Ngoc Son Temple<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another of the main sights at Hoan Kiem lake is <strong>the Ngoc Son Temple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ll spot it easily: it sits beside the old quarter, at the northern end of the lake, <strong>connected to the shore by the red Huc Bridge<\/strong>. It&#8217;s especially striking at night, when it lights up. If you&#8217;d rather not go in, you can admire it from outside over a juice or a coffee, perched on the little stools of any street stall along the lakeshore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It was built in honor of Tran Hung Dao<\/strong> (whose altar you&#8217;ll see inside), the Vietnamese hero who, as the story goes, managed to defeat an enormous Mongol army that threatened Vietnam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides the altar to <strong>Tran Hung Dao<\/strong>, inside the temple you&#8217;ll find something remarkable: the preserved body of a <strong>giant Hoan Kiem lake turtle<\/strong>, from an extremely rare species (<em>Rafetus swinhoei<\/em>) \u2014 the last specimen died in <strong>2016<\/strong>, an event treated almost as national news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that in a culture as superstitious as Vietnam&#8217;s, the turtle symbolizes protection, longevity, wisdom and stability, among other things \u2014 and in the past, whenever one of these turtles surfaced on the lake, it was read as an <strong>important omen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"visitor_information_and_opening_hours\"><\/span>Visitor information and opening hours<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hours:<\/strong> Open daily from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Entrance fee<\/strong>: 50,000 VND (~US$2)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"771\" src=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Templo-Ngoc-Son-hanoi.webp\" alt=\"Templo Ngoc Son en hanoi\" class=\"wp-image-4124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Templo-Ngoc-Son-hanoi.webp 1024w, https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Templo-Ngoc-Son-hanoi-300x226.webp 300w, https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Templo-Ngoc-Son-hanoi-768x578.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"see_the_thap_rua_islet\"><\/span>See the Thap Rua islet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the middle of the lake sits a <strong>small islet called&nbsp;Th\u00e1p R\u00f9a.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rising from this tiny islet is the <strong>Turtle Tower<\/strong> \u2014 which is exactly what <em>Th\u00e1p R\u00f9a<\/em> means. The tower was built at the end of the 19th century, during the French colonial period, and is visible from every point around the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As mentioned above, this peculiar species of giant turtle inhabited Hoan Kiem lake for a very long time, giving rise to legends woven into Vietnamese popular mythology \u2014 including the one that gave the lake its name, which we share below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_legend_of_hoan_kiem_lake\"><\/span>The legend of Hoan Kiem lake<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legend has it that <strong>L\u00ea L\u1ee3i<\/strong>, one of Vietnam&#8217;s emperors, managed to defeat the Chinese empire that threatened to control Vietnam thanks to a sword engraved with the inscription <strong>\u00abThu\u1eadn Thi\u00ean\u00bb<\/strong> (<em>the will of heaven<\/em>), which came from the Dragon King, whose palace lay in the depths of the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After defeating the Chinese, as L\u00ea L\u1ee3i was boating on the lake one day, an enormous turtle rose from the waters and asked him to return the sword to the Dragon King.
