class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What was once <strong>Vietnam&#8217;s first university<\/strong> has seen students, scholars and emperors pass through its grounds \u2014 and today, crowds of visitors who come to contemplate the remains of what this place once was.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The harshness of its exams and the rigidity of its rules were famous throughout the country,<\/strong> and many failed to pass such demanding tests. Those who succeeded, however, earned the honor of having their names carved into the stone steles mounted on turtle heads, many of which are still preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_to_see_at_the_temple_of_literature\"><\/span>What to see at the Temple of Literature<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A good part of the complex&#8217;s interior has been lost<\/strong> \u2014 it was originally considerably larger \u2014 but you can still walk through its main areas, some of them recently reconstructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interior is laid out across five <strong>courtyards<\/strong>, entered through a series of <strong>gates<\/strong>. Inside, you&#8217;ll find statues of the figures who shaped its history, all loaded with symbolism. Here&#8217;s a summary of each courtyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_great_gate\"><\/span>The great gate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opening the whole complex stands the great gate, an impressive doorway decorated with an inscription reading &#8220;Van Mieu Mon&#8221; (Gate of the Temple of Literature) in Chinese characters. This gate was rebuilt during the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_first_courtyard\"><\/span>The first courtyard<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just past the entrance you&#8217;ll find the first courtyard, ringed by gardens where students would spend the little free time they had between books, strolling and unwinding among the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The highlight here is undoubtedly <strong>the great gate (\u0110\u1ea1i Trung M\u00f4n)<\/strong> leading to the next courtyard, crowned with koi carp \u2014 a deeply symbolic element of Chinese and Vietnamese culture, whose legend represents the <strong>sacrifice and perseverance<\/strong> needed to reach one&#8217;s goals; in this case, the students&#8217; quest to become scholars and government officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The red-tiled roof rests on robust wooden pillars forming three separate doorways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"771\" src=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TEMPLO-DE-LA-LITERATURA-HANOI-2.jpg\" alt=\"VISITANDO EL TEMPLO DE LA LITERATURA EN HANOI CON UN GRUPO\" class=\"wp-image-4140\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TEMPLO-DE-LA-LITERATURA-HANOI-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TEMPLO-DE-LA-LITERATURA-HANOI-2-300x226.webp 300w, https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TEMPLO-DE-LA-LITERATURA-HANOI-2-768x578.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_second_courtyard_khue_van_cac\"><\/span>The second courtyard (Khu\u00ea V\u0103n C\u00e1c)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the second courtyard stands <strong>the temple&#8217;s most iconic image<\/strong>, known as <strong>Khu\u00ea V\u0103n C\u00e1c<\/strong> in Vietnamese: a pavilion of splendid proportions surrounded by lovely gardens, built in the early 19th century and now one of the main symbols of the city of Hanoi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_third_courtyard_thien_quang_well\"><\/span>The third courtyard (Thien Quang Well)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right through the gate you&#8217;ll see <strong>a huge pond<\/strong> occupying most of the third courtyard, flanked by no fewer than <strong>82 stone steles mounted on turtles<\/strong>, engraved with the names of 1,304 students who passed the exams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the turtles&#8217; heads (the turtle symbolizes longevity and wisdom in Vietnamese culture) are smooth and shiny \u2014 stroking them, so the belief goes, brought students luck in passing their tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_fourth_courtyard_dai_thanh_mon\"><\/span>The fourth courtyard (\u0110\u1ea1i Th\u00e0nh M\u00f4n)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We arrive at one of the temple&#8217;s main sections. At the very center of this courtyard you&#8217;ll find an <strong>enormous bronze incense burner<\/strong> \u2014 and above all, <strong>the altar where Confucius is worshipped<\/strong>, alongside his four most outstanding disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_fifth_courtyard_the_imperial_academy\"><\/span>The fifth courtyard: the Imperial Academy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally we reach the last courtyard, spread over two floors. Upstairs are altars with the figures of <strong>three emperors<\/strong> who contributed enormously to the creation and development of the temple and the academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the ground floor you&#8217;ll see <strong>an altar dedicated to Chu Van An<\/strong>, considered one of the finest and most respected teachers in all of Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On either side of the courtyard sit two small pavilions housing <strong>a bell and a drum<\/strong> of grand proportions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"771\" src=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TEMPLO-LITERATURA-EN-HANOI-1024x771.webp\" alt=\"PATIO INTERIOR DEL TEMPLO DE LA LITERATURA, HANOI\" class=\"wp-image-4141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TEMPLO-LITERATURA-EN-HANOI-1024x771.webp 1024w, https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TEMPLO-LITERATURA-EN-HANOI-300x226.webp 300w, https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TEMPLO-LITERATURA-EN-HANOI-768x578.webp 768w, https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TEMPLO-LITERATURA-EN-HANOI.webp 1063w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"temple_of_literature_hours_and_prices\"><\/span>Temple of Literature: hours and prices<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Entrance costs 70,000 VND (~US$2.70).
