Reports of torture from that period are largely denied by the current Vietnamese government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_hoa_lo_prison_museum\"><\/span>The Hoa Lo Prison museum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Known as the &#8220;<strong>Maison Centrale<\/strong>&#8220;, its role was to <strong>hold long-term prisoners<\/strong> in a vast building divided into several courtyards and wings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the mid-1990s, part of the prison building was <strong>demolished<\/strong> to make way for the enormous commercial tower that now looms over the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, most of the prison was <strong>restored and converted into the museum<\/strong> we can visit today \u2014 a window into a far-from-pleasant chapter of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"visiting_the_inside_of_hoa_lo_prison\"><\/span>Visiting the inside of Hoa Lo Prison<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"717\" src=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/carcel-hoa-lo-hanoi-museo-1024x717.webp\" alt=\"museo de hoa lo hanoi\" class=\"wp-image-1224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/carcel-hoa-lo-hanoi-museo-1024x717.webp 1024w, https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/carcel-hoa-lo-hanoi-museo-300x210.webp 300w, https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/carcel-hoa-lo-hanoi-museo-768x538.webp 768w, https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/carcel-hoa-lo-hanoi-museo.jpg 1142w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cold, thick walls, <strong>empty rooms and isolation cells<\/strong> with minuscule windows make up the heart of a place that gives <strong>goosebumps<\/strong> to anyone who walks through it. Long since emptied, it remains a place that moves and unsettles in equal measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The various rooms are filled with &#8220;informative&#8221; panels <strong>displaying the tortures inflicted and the instruments used<\/strong> for them. It&#8217;s striking how little space is devoted to the era when the prison held American soldiers \u2014 most of the building focuses on the period when the French ran the captivity of the Vietnamese people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"life_inside_hoa_lo_prison\"><\/span>Life inside Hoa Lo Prison<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although <strong>much of what this place once was has been lost<\/strong>, a walk through what remains is enough to grasp the subhuman living conditions endured by those unlucky enough to temporarily &#8220;reside&#8221; in this chilling place \u2014 and the tortures many of them were subjected to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In theory there was room for about <strong>500 prisoners<\/strong>, but at certain points in history far more <strong>were crammed inside<\/strong> \u2014 shackled by the feet, with communal latrines inside the same room. An ideal recipe for disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its <strong>central location<\/strong> in Hanoi made possible the <strong>exchange of messages and the smuggling<\/strong> of substances like opium and cigarettes, which flew back and forth over the prison walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were even some <strong>escape attempts<\/strong> through an adjoining well \u2014 moderately successful ones.
