To give you an idea: if you want to see it properly and without rushing, count on <strong>at least 2\u20133 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The indoor route is organized into <strong>six themed galleries<\/strong> following the chronological order of the country&#8217;s military history:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The origins:<\/strong> the earliest days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>939\u20131858:<\/strong> defending independence against the Chinese dynasties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1858\u20131945:<\/strong> the struggle against French colonialism.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1945\u20131954:<\/strong> the resistance war against France, up to Dien Bien Phu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1954\u20131975:<\/strong> the war against the United States.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1975 to today:<\/strong> reunification, the postwar years and contemporary Vietnam.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit can feel <strong>a little dense<\/strong>, much like the <a href=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/en\/ho-chi-minh-city\/\">War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City<\/a>, especially if military history isn&#8217;t your thing. That said, <strong>in our view it&#8217;s one of the best ways to understand today&#8217;s Vietnam<\/strong> \u2014 making sense of the country without passing through here or the Saigon museum is a tall order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside: the Victory Tower and the heavy weaponry display<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the museum&#8217;s most striking part <strong>isn&#8217;t indoors at all, but in the outdoor courtyard<\/strong>. This is where the heavy weaponry collection is displayed \u2014 far better presented than at the old site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The centerpiece of the courtyard is the <strong>Victory Tower<\/strong>: its pentagonal base represents <strong>the five social classes<\/strong> of socialist Vietnam \u2014 intellectuals, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs and soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the left and right of the building are two areas with <strong>hardware used in the different wars, mainly against France and the US<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walking through the courtyard among the remains of downed aircraft and the tanks that decided the war <strong>is an experience you&#8217;ll be hard-pressed to find in any other museum in the world<\/strong>. Fair warning: under a strong sun it gets tough \u2014 bring water and a hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_new_location_of_the_military_history_museum\"><\/span>The new location of the Military History Museum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After <strong>many years<\/strong> at its historic Dien Bien Phu site (where it opened in 1959 as the &#8220;Army Museum&#8221;), the museum moved into a brand-new building. Construction began in 2020 and the result is <strong>one of the most imposing museums in the country<\/strong>: a gigantic complex with several floors, gardens and far more room for displaying heavy weaponry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong>In our view, the move was worth it<\/strong>: the old site had grown small and dated for the size of the collection. The new facilities are huge and modern, and won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vietnam.vn\/es\/cong-trinh-bao-tang-lich-su-quan-su-viet-nam-nhan-giai-thuong-lon-giai-thuong-kien-truc-quoc-gia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grand Prize at Vietnam&#8217;s 16th National Architecture Awards<\/a> in 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our favorite part: the outdoor courtyard is <strong>much better laid out than at the old site<\/strong>, with the planes, tanks and missiles spread out with enough room to photograph them without jostling with other visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"opening_hours_and_prices_of_the_military_history_museum\"><\/span>Opening hours and prices of the Military History Museum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hours:<\/strong> 8:00\u201311:30 am and 1:00\u20134:30 pm. Note the midday closure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Closed:<\/strong> Mondays and Fridays (unlike the old site, which opened daily).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Entrance fee:<\/strong> 40,000 VND (~US$1.50)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_to_get_to_the_military_history_museum\"><\/span>How to get to the Military History Museum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important: the museum has moved.<\/strong> The new location is in western Hanoi (about 7\u20138 km from the Old Quarter). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old Dien Bien Phu site (Ba Dinh) is now closed to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new venue is no longer a stop you can fold into a walking route around the center: you have to make the trip on purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the options that work best:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Grab (motorbike or car):<\/strong> the most convenient and affordable. From the Old Quarter, <strong>a car costs 70,000\u2013100,000 VND (~US$2.70\u20133.80)<\/strong> and takes 20\u201325 minutes depending on traffic. A motorbike is even cheaper: <strong>70,000\u201390,000 VND (~US$2.70\u20133.50)<\/strong>. For us, the best option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>City bus:<\/strong> the cheapest option. Lines stopping nearby are <strong>71B, 74, 87, 88, 107, 157, E05, E07 and E09<\/strong>. Ticket: <strong>8,000\u20139,000 VND (~US$0.35)<\/strong>.
