Surrounded by <strong>a pond brimming with lotus flowers<\/strong> and crossed by a single bridge, it&#8217;s an eye-catching spot \u2014 perfect for a bit of Instagramming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the season, the place fills with visitors \u2014 and although it&#8217;s rarely as crowded as <a href=\"https:\/\/viajarvietnam.com\/en\/ninh-binh\/\">other spots in Ninh Binh<\/a> like Mua Cave, it may take a while to get a photo without people in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the_three_levels_of_bich_dong_pagoda\"><\/span>The three levels of Bich Dong pagoda<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bich Dong pagoda<\/strong> is built on <strong>three levels up the mountain<\/strong> \u2014 lower, middle and upper \u2014 separated by steps carved into the rock. Each represents a small stage of the journey, both physical and spiritual, toward a calmer, more contemplative space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The lower level (Ch\u00f9a H\u1ea1)<\/strong> is the first you&#8217;ll reach at the foot of the mountain. Built in the 18th century, it houses the Buddhas of the Three Times, along with statues representing Chi Kien, Chi The and Chi Tam, the three great masters who contributed to the building of Bich Dong Pagoda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To reach <strong>the middle level (Ch\u00f9a Trung)<\/strong> you&#8217;ll climb a fair number of steps to a pagoda partially built inside the cave \u2014 in fact, originally (in the 15th century) it was known simply as <strong>&#8220;Ch\u00f9a \u0110\u1ed9ng&#8221;<\/strong>, the cave pagoda, as it was no more than a small shrine within. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venturing into the cave, you&#8217;ll find an enormous bronze bell and several altars with statues. Symbolically, ascending to the middle pagoda means <strong>entering the &#8220;heart of the mountain&#8221;<\/strong> \u2014 deepening one&#8217;s faith by leaving the mundane behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One final climb, back in the open air, brings you to <strong>the upper level (Ch\u00f9a Th\u01b0\u1ee3ng) \u2014 the original temple founded in the 15th century and, for us, the most interesting part<\/strong>. Here you&#8217;ll find a small viewpoint and two shrines, one on each side: the right one dedicated to the God of the Earth, the left to the God of the Mountain. If you&#8217;re in Tam Coc, simply rent a bicycle or motorbike and ride over.
