Ha Giang is a mountainous region in northeastern Vietnam, so on top of the area’s typical climate you have to factor in the altitude.
Ha Giang’s climate has two main seasons, like most of the country: rainy and dry. This is essential to keep in mind when planning any trip to the area if you don’t want to get it wrong.
The rainy season in Ha Giang
When is the rainy season in Ha Giang? From late June to early October is the wet season in this area. During these months, the weather is normally hot and humid, with intense downpours at times.
Traveling to Ha Giang is still a worthwhile option even then — just bear in mind that the rain makes the area and the road more dangerous, with landslides after heavy downpours being fairly common.
The best time to travel to Ha Giang
The dry season runs from early October to late May. The cold in December, January and February takes some of the shine off those months, so in truth the best time to visit Ha Giang and ride the Loop is from March to May, with clear skies, little rain and good weather overall.

During these two winter months, temperatures can get quite cold — to the point that snowfall is occasionally seen on the area’s highest mountains.
So keep that in mind, and bundle up well if you’re planning to visit during these months.
November and the buckwheat bloom, another ideal month for Ha Giang
In November, buckwheat flowers bloom all across the region — the crop is widely grown here — painting much of the landscape white and purple.
At this time of year you can still run into the odd downpour, but with less intensity and shorter duration than in the summer months.
Buckwheat is considered one of the symbolic flowers of these mountainous regions of northern Vietnam, and Ha Giang province is without doubt an ideal place to admire it in full splendor.
