If you’re looking for the best way to travel from Sapa to Ha Giang or vice versa — whether it’s to ride the Ha Giang Loop or to escape the Hanoi heat for some trekking around Sapa’s mountain rice terraces — this post explains how to do it.
Sapa and Ha Giang are two essential destinations in northern Vietnam that you should visit if you have the time, especially if you love nature or motorbike routes.
The distance between Sapa and Ha Giang is roughly 240 kilometers — which may not sound like much, but it turns into a genuine trek across both provinces, since the lack of a direct road in good condition stretches the journey out over several hours.
Neither city has an airport, and no train connects them either, so the three main options for traveling between Ha Giang and Sapa are: bus, motorbike and private car.

Ha Giang to Sapa by bus
To travel between Ha Giang and Sapa, the most appealing option is without doubt the bus.
The bus ride between these two popular Vietnamese destinations takes 6 to 8 hours, with several departures a day.
Our recommendation: if possible, do this leg on the night bus and save both time and a night’s accommodation. It’s a sleeper bus, so you’ll manage a reasonable rest — curves permitting.
Local drivers have a habit of overloading the bus with extra passengers to earn a little more on the side — so don’t stress if the bus looks full and people keep boarding. It’s completely normal on this route.
There are buses from 300,000 VND (~US$11.50), but we recommend spending a bit more on the cabin bus, with more private and comfortable berths than the standard sleeper.
This is a fairly popular route, so book your tickets in advance to avoid the nasty surprise of a full bus on the day you want to leave.
You can see the different companies operating the route and the timetables here.
At this other link you’ll find timetables for the reverse leg, Ha Giang to Sapa.
Ha Giang to Sapa by motorbike
Another option is to ride from Ha Giang to Sapa by motorbike.
The route takes you across a truly spectacular mountainous region, passing through Hoang Su Phi before crossing into the neighboring province of Lao Cai, home to Sapa.
You can do the ride in a single long day of riding, but our recommendation is to split it over several and take time to explore the Hoang Su Phi area — a region still untouched by most foreign tourism, where you can stop to admire spectacular rice terraces or spend a few days trekking before continuing to Sapa.
By taxi / private transfer
The third option for traveling from Ha Giang to Sapa is a private transfer. It’s the fastest, but also the most expensive.
The journey takes about 6 hours, and prices are negotiable but hover around US$200 per car.
