The Phong Nha area, with its Phong Nha Ke Bang national park full of jungle, villages and caves, is one of the best places you can visit in central Vietnam.
If you’re looking for how to get to Phong Nha, fair warning: neither planes nor trains reach this corner directly, so you’ll have to arrive by road — either straight through, or via the nearby city of Dong Hoi.
In this post we explain how to land yourself in Phong Nha from Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Hue and other points in Vietnam like Da Nang or Hoi An — what the alternatives are, and the pros and cons of each, so you can choose what best fits your travel style.

Where is Phong Nha? Distances and approximate times
For orientation: Phong Nha sits in Quang Binh province, in central Vietnam. The nearest city with an airport, train station and other services is Dong Hoi, about 45 kilometers away.
The first time we traveled there, we came from Hanoi on a sleeper bus. We left at dusk and, after several stops in the middle of the night, reached the village at dawn. Other times we’ve set off from Ninh Binh, about two hours south of the capital, which shortens the trip a little.
If you prefer the train, you’ll travel through the night to Dong Hoi and connect with a taxi on arrival.
You can also choose to fly to Dong Hoi and spare yourself the winding roads; the flight takes barely an hour, but between airports and transfers, the time saved isn’t as big as it seems.
From Hue the trip is much shorter. The distance is around two hundred kilometers and, in our experience, a shared van gets you to Phong Nha in about four hours.
And if you’re already in Dong Hoi, Phong Nha is a short hop away — by taxi, the trip shrinks to forty minutes.

Hanoi or Ninh Binh to Phong Nha by bus
If you want the cheapest option from the capital or from Ninh Binh, the sleeper bus is your friend.
Several private companies connect Hanoi and Ninh Binh with Phong Nha, many with modern buses offering individual cabins.
The trip takes about 9–10 hours from Hanoi and a bit less if you board in Ninh Binh; tickets range from 350,000 to 800,000 VND (~US$13–31).
Since these are tourist buses, they usually pick you up at your accommodation and drop you right in the village, saving you a transfer in Dong Hoi.
If you go by bus, we strongly recommend choosing the Cabin Bus — more comfortable and modern, with your own private berth to relax in during the long ride.
You can check timetables, prices and book here from Hanoi and here from Ninh Binh.
Pros and cons of the bus from Hanoi or Ninh Binh
Pros
- Affordable price and many daily departures.
- They take you into central Phong Nha, sparing you another transfer to arrange.
- You can sleep along the way if you pick a sleeper bus.
Cons
- It’s a long ride and can be uncomfortable for tall people, especially on standard buses with small berths.
Hanoi or Ninh Binh to Phong Nha by train + taxi
If you’d rather stretch your legs and travel in more comfort, the train + taxi combination might be for you.
From Hanoi or Ninh Binh you can take one of Vietnam Railways’ night trains (like the SE5, SE7 or SE19) to Dong Hoi.
Boarding in Ninh Binh, the trip takes 8–9 hours; from Hanoi, add a couple more. You can choose between four- and six-berth compartments. A few private companies — Livitrans, Violette, Laman Express — offer somewhat more comfortable carriages, though at a much higher price.
When you reach Dong Hoi, you’ll need a taxi or private transfer for the final stretch to Phong Nha, about 45 minutes.
You can check train timetables, prices and book here from Hanoi and here from Ninh Binh.
Pros and cons of train + taxi from Hanoi or Ninh Binh
Pros
- More comfortable, more space than the sleeper bus, and freedom to move around during the ride.
- A good option if you want to try Vietnam’s trains or you’re traveling with children.
- Private cabins are available for extra privacy (at a higher price).
Cons
- You arrive in Dong Hoi, not Phong Nha, so you’ll have to arrange the final taxi or transfer.
- The total cost is higher than the direct bus.
- The overall journey is longer (13–15 hours in total).

Phong Nha by plane: fly to Dong Hoi + taxi
Phong Nha has no airport of its own, but the neighboring city of Dong Hoi does have air connections with the country’s main cities.
You can fly from Hanoi to Dong Hoi in just over an hour — a bit more from Ho Chi Minh City.
Ticket prices vary by season and tend to be higher than the train or bus (around 1.3 million dong, ~US$50).
Once you land, a taxi or private transfer will have you at your Phong Nha accommodation in under an hour.
Pros and cons of flying to Dong Hoi
Pros
- It’s the fastest way in: you’ll be in Phong Nha in around 6–7 hours door to door.
- You avoid a night in transit.
Cons
- There are only one or two flights a day, and they can get expensive in high season.
- You need to get to the airport, which is 45 km from Phong Nha.
- You’ll still have to arrange the final taxi.
Hue to Phong Nha by bus or van
The city of Hue, the old imperial capital, sits about 215 km from Phong Nha — so if you’re already in Hue, the simplest plan is to hop on a bus or minivan and cross central Vietnam by road.
In about 4–5 hours you’ll be in Phong Nha. Plenty of companies run the route and prices are quite reasonable; some offer “VIP” or “Limousine” buses with more comfortable seats.
Here are the timetables and prices.
Pros and cons of the bus from Hue
Pros
- Cheap and direct — no transfer in Dong Hoi.
- Several departures a day and pickup at your accommodation.
- Choice of sleeper buses, VIP buses or Limousines.
Cons
- Less comfortable than a private car.
- The road twists in its final stretch, so if you get motion sick, grab a front seat.
Hue to Phong Nha by train + taxi
Just as from Hanoi, you can also combine train and taxi from Hue: take a train to Dong Hoi and connect with a taxi to Phong Nha.
The train ride takes about 3 hours and is quite cheap; add the taxi fare and roughly one more hour from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha.
You can check prices and book in advance here.

Pros and cons of the train + taxi route from Hue
Pros
- A calmer experience than the bus
- You can use the stop to visit Dong Hoi, its market and its beach.
- Private cabins let you sleep and keep your belongings secure.
Cons
- It’s slower and usually more expensive than the direct bus.
- You have to combine several modes of transport
How to get to Phong Nha from Hoi An or Da Nang
Coming from the south, from Hoi An or Da Nang, the journey and the options are similar to Hue — just add about 3 extra hours. Here are the most common options, which are essentially the same.
From Hoi An
Especially recommended if you’re in Hoi An, since the small town has no other transport options. The trip from Hoi An to Phong Nha takes around 7.5 hours. As with the northern routes, we recommend the Cabin Bus.
From Da Nang
If you’re in Da Nang, besides the bus you can take the train to Dong Hoi (5–6 hours) + a car or taxi transfer to Phong Nha (1 hour).
Conclusion: what’s the best way to get to Phong Nha?
There’s no single answer that fits everyone, but in short: if you’re traveling on a tight budget and want to go straight to Phong Nha, the sleeper bus is the most practical and economical option.
If you’d rather stretch your legs and sleep better, the train to Dong Hoi + taxi combination offers more comfort, at the cost of a bit more time and money.
And for those who don’t want to lose a minute and have a comfortable budget, the flight to Dong Hoi followed by a taxi to Phong Nha is the fastest way in.
