How to get from Hanoi to Sapa: the essentials
There’s no doubt that Sapa, with its rice terraces, its ethnic communities and its cool, pleasant climate, is one of Vietnam’s most visited destinations — and despite being fairly touristy, it still keeps a certain charm that makes it well worth a visit if you have the time.
Remember to check our post on the best things to do in Sapa to discover everything the place has to offer.
Where is Sapa? Distances and approximate times from Hanoi
Sapa is a beautiful town in northwest Vietnam, specifically in Lao Cai province, on the border with neighboring China.
Nestled among mountains, the town enjoys a cool climate and privileged views of Indochina’s highest peak, Fansipan.
The distance between the country’s buzzing capital, Hanoi, and the quiet town of Sapa is roughly 311 kilometers — which translates into more or fewer hours depending on the transport you choose.
- If you go by road — bus, minivan or car — expect at least 4 to 6 hours, depending on your stops and the traffic.
- The train, slower, takes you to Lao Cai station — about 37 kilometers from Sapa — in around 8 hours. From Lao Cai station, road transport gets you to Sapa in about 1 hour.
Both options have their pros and cons, so keep reading — we break them down below.
1. Hanoi to Sapa by bus (sleeper bus)
One of the best ways to travel from Hanoi to Sapa is, without a doubt, the bus.
Something that surprises many first-time bus travelers in Vietnam is discovering that many of them are actually sleeper buses.
Several transport companies, such as Daiichi, connect the two with regular departures at various times of day.
Depending on the company, the bunk-style beds are more or less comfortable. Keep in mind that the beds on the standard sleeper bus are Vietnamese-sized — so if you’re tall, consider paying a small premium for a more comfortable option like the limousine or cabin bus, covered below.
The sleeper bus trip takes about 5 or 6 hours and usually includes pickup at your hotel in Hanoi’s old quarter.
A big advantage of the bus over the train is that there’s no second transfer from Lao Cai to arrange. The bus goes all the way to Sapa, ending at the Sapa Express Bus Station in the center of town.
Pros and cons of the sleeper bus from Hanoi to Sapa
PROS
- Speed
- It drops you right at Sapa’s station, so there’s no second transfer from Lao Cai to book.
- They pick you up at your accommodation
CONS
- Less comfortable than the train.
- If you get motion sick easily, take note: the road has plenty of curves in its final stretch

2. Hanoi to Sapa by limousine or cabin bus
If you want more comfort or fewer fellow passengers, a good option is the shared limousine-style vans that run this route several times a day.
The comfortable seats and generous space make them a great choice for those who prefer something more comfortable and private.
Our favorite — a middle-ground option — is the so-called “Cabin Bus”: a sleeper bus with separate cabins instead of bunks and about 22 berths in total, giving you the privacy of your own space plus the comfort of a bed.
Several companies run them, such as Techbus VN and Amazing Uncles.
Both options (VIP and Cabin) run around 400,000–450,000 VND (~US$15–17), and you can conveniently book them online here.
Pros and cons of the VIP and Cabin bus from Hanoi to Sapa
PROS

CONS
- Less comfortable than the train.
- If you get motion sick easily, take note: the road has plenty of curves in its final stretch

The trip, around 8 hours long, leaves you in Lao Cai, roughly 1 hour by road from Sapa. Once in Lao Cai, you’ll need transport to Sapa.
This option is ideal for those seeking more comfort, and for families with children, since you can move freely around the train instead of being pinned to a bus seat.
There are 2-, 4- and 6-berth cabins, and prices range from 680,000 to 800,000 VND (~US$26–31) depending on the cabin type.

For a more special, comfortable experience, we recommend choosing one of the roughly 8 private companies operating carriages on trains SP1 and SP3. The Laman Express carriages in particular are highly sought after for their comfort and sell out quickly.
