How to get from Hanoi to Ha Giang by bus, taxi, motorbike or private transfer

Ha Giang sits close to the Chinese border, so to get there from Hanoi you’ll cover the roughly 300 km separating the two cities.

For now, Ha Giang province has no train connection and no airport, so traveling by road is the only way in.

Hanoi to Ha Giang by bus

To travel between Hanoi and Ha Giang, you have three types of bus: the sleeper bus, the cabin bus and the limousine bus. The main difference between them comes down to price and comfort, so choose based on your budget and priorities.

All three are door-to-door services: they pick you up at your accommodation in Hanoi and drop you at your accommodation in Ha Giang.

If you’re planning to ride the Ha Giang Loop, some agencies and hostels in Hanoi include your first night’s accommodation in Ha Giang when you buy the bus ticket. The only condition is renting the loop motorbike through them. In exchange for that small commission, you save a night’s hotel.

Just keep one important detail in mind: you’ll arrive in Ha Giang between 3 and 4 in the morning, so that “included night” is really just a few hours of rest, not a full night.

1. Sleeper bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang, the budget option

The cheapest and most popular option for traveling between the two is the so-called sleeper bus — a bus fitted with bunk-style beds, somewhat cramped if you’re tall, but far more comfortable than a regular bus seat.

As far as we know, the main companies operating the Hanoi–Ha Giang route are Ha Giang Limousine Bus, Express Ha Giang, Hung Thanh, Truly Ha Giang and Quang Nghi. Prices vary with the company and how modern the bus is.

The journey takes roughly 6 or 7 hours, with one stop along the way to stretch your legs and grab a bite.

The price varies a little depending on the company and the age of the bus.

You can buy your ticket at any accommodation or travel agency in Hanoi — or, if you’d rather have everything locked in before you leave, book online directly here.

From Hanoi Noi Bai Airport to Ha Giang

If you’ve just landed in Hanoi and would rather skip the city and head straight to Ha Giang, we have good news for you.

There’s a bus service that stops at the airport before continuing on to Ha Giang — use it and you’ll save the trip into Hanoi, plus the money and time, departing directly from Noi Bai airport.

We recommend booking your ticket in advance here, since seats are limited and sell out easily, especially in high season.

2. Hanoi to Ha Giang by cabin bus

The cabin bus is the most modern and comfortable version of Vietnam’s sleeper buses. Its layout of berths arranged as private compartments gives you more space overall — legroom included — plus a curtain for privacy, making it far easier to sleep than on the standard sleeper.

The cabin bus costs only around 100,000 VND more, and the journey time is exactly the same — so if you want a better rest, this is the one to pick.

You can book it online here with companies like Tbus Vietnam (choose the VIP 24 bus).

3. Limousine bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang

The limousine bus is, in essence, a converted van with wide, comfortable seats. This type of transport has no berths or compartments — it’s designed for those who prefer to travel sitting up and enjoying the views.

It’s a very good option for daytime journeys, though less appealing if you’re making this trip overnight.

Private transfer from Hanoi to Ha Giang

If you’re a large group, or price isn’t a big concern, you can take a taxi straight from Hanoi to Ha Giang.

The usual approach, depending on how many of you there are, is a rented car or minivan.

Obviously it’s not the cheapest option, but it is a very comfortable one: you set the departure time and choose the stops along the way.

You can check prices and options here.

Hanoi to Ha Giang by motorbike

If you’re already exploring Vietnam by motorbike or have your own bike, riding it to Ha Giang is undoubtedly an excellent option, saving you a rental once you arrive.

That said, we suggest making the trip during the day, or splitting it into stages, to get the most out of the experience.

The ride to Ha Giang takes a full day on the road, so leave early and point north to make sure you enjoy the journey properly.

One warning: while the rest of the country rarely gives you trouble over an international driving permit, once you reach Ha Giang you risk being fined, as we explain here — so make sure you meet all the requirements and that your international permit is valid in Vietnam before continuing to Ha Giang.

The best way to get from Hanoi to Ha Giang

In short: the bus is generally the best way to travel from Hanoi to Ha Giang. Depending on your budget and comfort needs, pick one type of bus or another for the trip.

If you’re a group, or don’t want to depend on someone else’s timetable, a private transfer will save you money and time.

Finally, if you don’t ride a motorbike, you can always do the loop on an organized tour with Easy Riders — a comfortable way to enjoy the route without driving.

The sleeper bus is the cheapest option: a bus fitted with bunk beds.
The cabin bus is its upgraded version, with more private compartments and greater comfort.
The limousine bus, meanwhile, is a van with wide seats, ideal if you prefer traveling by day and enjoying the scenery.

All three are door-to-door services: they pick you up at your accommodation in Hanoi and drop you at your accommodation in Ha Giang.

Vietnam as a second home since 2019

My relationship with Vietnam got off on the wrong foot in 2019, after catching dengue fever in Cambodia — but a second chance turned that indifference into absolute passion. Today I live in Ho Chi Minh City, exploring the country with the calm and depth I lacked on that first visit.

From my base in Vietnam, I use my on-the-ground experience to help other travelers discover the country through this blog, proving that second chances — and well-planned trips — can change your life.

That same drive to share the world also led me to found Aventúrate a Viajar, a travel agency where I design and coordinate small group trips across Vietnam and many other countries.
