When we talk about what to see in Ninh Binh, the first image that comes to mind is Tam Coc. It’s without doubt the best-known area of Ninh Binh, and where most accommodation for tourists and travelers is concentrated.
Set in a privileged natural enclave and surrounded by rice paddies, it’s the perfect base for a couple of days exploring the surroundings and nearby areas like Trang An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Although the village itself has nothing special beyond a multitude of places made by and for tourists, the countryside around this small town enjoys unbeatable views that make everyone who visits fall in love.

Watch the sunset from Mua Cave (Hang Mua)
Climbing Mua Cave (Hang Mua) is one of the best ways to end the day in Tam Coc. If you want to enjoy the best views in Ninh Binh — and probably of much of your entire trip to Vietnam — rest assured this place belongs on your list.
The nearly 500 steps to the top will test your legs, but the reward is worth every bit of the effort.
Even though it has become a small — and crowded — tourist complex, with ponds and walkways built around it, it’s still well worth visiting. Even on a cloudy day, the landscape from the top does not disappoint.
Take a boat ride along the Ngo Dong river
Of the several boat rides available around Tam Coc, the one departing from the small lake in the center of the village is the best known.
Although at one hour it isn’t as long as the rides in the Trang An area, this one is especially interesting for one peculiarity: the rowers paddle with their feet.
The ride takes you along the river and through its caves (Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Ba), surrounded by karst walls, with colorful rice fields stretching along the banks — a truly striking landscape, especially in late April and late August.
Tam Coc boat ride: hours, prices and tips
- The Tam Coc boat ride runs daily from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm.
- The ride costs 250,000 VND (~US$9.60) per person.
- There’s a package called the Discovery Tour that includes the boat ride plus visits to Bich Dong and other pagodas (by electric cart) for 350,000 VND.
- During the ride, it’s common for vendors to paddle up alongside offering snacks or drinks, often insisting you buy something “for your rower”. You’re under no obligation, and you can politely decline.
- Rowers also usually expect a tip at the end of the ride. It isn’t mandatory either, but some may not take it well if you give nothing.
- Bring a cap or hat — the heat is intense and there’s very little shade along the route.
- Try to go first thing in the morning to beat the crowds.
Step inside Bich Dong pagoda
Carved directly into the limestone rock and perfectly camouflaged in its surroundings, this is one of Tam Coc’s unmissable sights.
This small Buddhist complex, built in the 15th century and spread across different levels, is for us one of the most special and mystical places you can visit in the area.

Get lost among the rice paddies
Another of the best ways to explore Tam Coc is to rent a bicycle or motorbike and set off through the countryside with no fixed route, losing yourself along paths lined with rice paddies, canals and karst mountains — an idyllic landscape of greens and golds.
In the center of the village there are several places to rent a bicycle or motorbike, and most accommodations offer the service too.
At many homestays and guesthouses, bikes are actually included for free or lent out for very little (around 20,000 VND per day).
Motorbikes usually cost between 100,000 and 150,000 VND per day, depending on the model.
In Tam Coc, the paths and roads are mostly flat with little traffic, which makes cycling easy for anyone — and it lets you reach places like Bich Dong pagoda, Hang Mua, or simply the rice fields and small villages scattered around the area, all on your own.
How to get to and around Tam Coc
Tam Coc is a large area with several different attractions, so there are various ways to explore it and get around.

On your own
The most flexible and affordable option is to explore Tam Coc independently: rent a bicycle and pedal from place to place, letting Ninh Binh’s endless green lead the way.
Most accommodations in Tam Coc have city bikes they’ll lend you for free or at very low prices.
If pedaling in intense heat isn’t your thing, you can also arrange a vehicle with driver for the day through your accommodation or one of the many local agencies.
